Cell Cycle

Cells proliferate by a process that consists of four coordinated processes that ultimately lead to cell division. 95% of this cell cycle is spent in what is called interphase during which the cell grows and prepares for DNA replication (G1 phase), DNA is synthesized (S phase), and finally protein synthesis in preparation for mitosis (G2 phase). The final phase of the cell cycle (mitosis or M phase) involves nuclear division .These stages are controlled by ‘checkpoints’ that prevent unwanted progression that might result in DNA or cellular damage. Mutations in key cell cycle components, such as p53 or ras, are hallmarks of cancer and allow the cell to proceed through stopped checkpoints.
