Cytochrome P450

Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) are highly conserved enzymes that utilize iron as a cofactor to oxidize its targets, which include fatty acids, steroids, natural products, xenobiotics and drugs. CYP action on fatty acids and steroids controls their synthesis and metabolism. By acting on natural products and drugs, CYPs can decrease the activity and bioavailability of these molecules.
