Natural products
‘Natural products’ are a fascinating and diverse group of bioactive molecules that are produced by living organisms. These types of compounds are typically divided into two classes: primary metabolites, used for intrinsic function of the producing organism and secondary metabolites, used to increase the competitiveness of the organism within its environment. Both classes of natural products have many potential uses, including drugs (e.g. antibiotics, analgesics, cancer drugs, many others), building blocks for other molecules, and chemical tools/probes (e.g. fluorescence, luminescence).
