In The News: Bempedoic acid is an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia sold under the brand name Nexletol. It is an ATP citrate lyase inhibitor that reduces LDL cholesterol levels with a lower incidence of muscle-related side effects common with statins. In a study just out in the New England Journal of Medicine, among statin-intolerant patients, treatment with bempedoic acid was associated with a lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.
