Its prototype, cyclopamine was discovered as a teratogenic steroidal alkaloid that was found to cause cyclopia in cattle that grazed on the California corn lily, its natural source. These compounds inhibit the Hedgehog signaling pathway, a pathway critical for embryonic development and Saridegib (IPI-926) has shown efficacy in basal cell carcinoma.
