FAAzo4 (1882060-21-0) is a photoswitchable fatty acid that cells rapidly incorporate into membrane phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine(PE) residues, mainly in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). These photoswitchable membrane fatty acids allow for photoisomerization (trans-cis) leading to changes in membrane viscosity. FAAzo4-treated cells displayed altered ER export for  the proteins m-Cherry-TNFα and EGFP-GPI. An interesting new method for manipulating membrane biophysical properties in living cells.
