Phosphoinositides

Phosphoinositides are complex amphiphilic lipid-and-sugar (e.g. myo-inositol, glycerol) structures that can be found in cellular, nuclear, and organelle membranes. They can be modified, with phosphate (e.g. PIP2) or glycosyl groups, for example. They play critical roles in membrane fluidity, budding, permeability, and trafficking, as well as regulating the activity of transmembrane and membrane-associated proteins.
