Ferrioxamine E (20008-20-2) is a hydroxamate siderophore. Siderophores like Ferrioxamine E make iron easier to access and absorb by cells. Their ability to chelate iron makes them useful in research on iron overload disorders such as hemochromatosis and sickle cell disease.1 Ferrioxamine E is used to enhance growth of certain bacterial species including Salmonella, Enterobacter saka-zakii and Yersinia enterocolitica.2 It does not improve growth of Escherichia coli, Shigella, Proteus, Providencia and Morganella species.3 Because siderophores are produced by bacteria as virulence factors, they are useful tools in infectious disease research.4
