Cellular Senescence
Cellular senescence is a state of permanent cell cycle arrest resulting in changes to cell morphology, physiology, gene expression, and chromatin organization. Cells derived from normal tissues undergo senescence after a certain number of divisions in culture, whereas tumor cells often do not. It also occurs during aging, and in diseases such as Alzheimer’s and diabetes. It can be induced by numerous stresses, such as telomere shortening, DNA damage, and oxidative stress.
