Phosphodiesterases

Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) hydrolyze phosphodiester bonds, most often in the cyclic nucleotides cAMP and cGMP. In doing so, they mediate the many signaling pathways that utilize these second messengers. They comprise a family of enzymes expressed in many different tissue types, and are involved in neurological, pulmonary, and vascular diseases, among others.
