Membrane transporters

Membrane transporters are proteins that span the cell membrane and function in moving substances into or out of the cell. Transported substances range from salt ions, to glucose, to monoamines, to proteins. Some transporters, such as pores and ion channels, move their targets passively, while others utilize ATP (e.g. Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase) or an electrochemical gradient [e.g. excitatory amino acid transporters (EAATs)] for energy to accomplish transport.
