Calcium Signaling

Calcium regulation is critical for cellular function, playing direct and indirect roles in many different cellular processes. Fluctuations in extracellular calcium levels are sensed by certain GPCRs and transduced by the phospholipase C pathway. Inside the cell, where calcium pools are regulated by the ER and mitochondria, it is utilized as a second messenger for fundamental events such as growth, apoptosis, and protein synthesis and function. Many small molecule tools can used for studying this pathway including ionophores. calcium channel blockers and activators, calmodulin modulators, calcium ATPases, and more.
